The best alternative is NAPS2, which is both free and Open Source. Since the alternative is to either spend money on the Pro version of Vuescan, or spend much more money on a new scanner (minimum around $800 for one that will scan 4x5 film, which I shoot), I have a strong interest in getting xsane to behave. I can scan negatives over the full bed with the trial version of Vuescan, but when I try to use xsane either stand-alone or as a GIMP plug-in, in "transparency" mode I'm limited to an area about 13x18 cm (5x7 inches) in the upper left portion of the scan bed.
